On the Road with H. Stephen Bailey

The International Association of Registered Financial Consultants (IARFC) reports that their Chairman H. Stephen Bailey, MRFC is on a weeklong Bailey Stevewebvisit to their International Chapters. As the representative of the IARFC US, Mr. Bailey is looking to reconnect with the Chapter Chairs of Hong Kong, Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, China and Macau.

These Chapters were established through national association affiliates who are typically the most highly visible and extremely qualified financial consultants in their respective country. The typical structure is the formation of two entities – a professional association to serve the consultants and an educational partnership or entity to offer educational programs.

The IARFC has representatives in Australia and New Zealand, Bermuda, Canada, China, Greater Asia, Hong Kong and Macau, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Trinidad and the United States. Qualified financial professionals from any country may apply for the Registered Financial Consultant (RFC®) designation by meeting the same standards as those in the US with adjustments considering different institutions, educational courses and licensing.

Current Trip…

On his current trip, Chairman Bailey will meet with Samuel Yung, Dr. Teresa So and Allan Wan in Hong Kong, Ralph Liew and Jeffrey Chiew in the Philippines and Kai Tu Yuan in Taiwan. These meetings will include visits to potential RFC® education program providers, Insurance Commissioner Dennis Fuma in Manila, President of Manulife Ryan Charland, President of Philamlife Aibee Cantos and IMM International in Taipai. In the Philippines he is the Keynote Speaker addressing graduates of the latest RFC® program and will attend their graduation.

“I am extremely pleased to be meeting with our International Representatives,” commented Bailey.  “Making sure that we are all on the same page unites our international presence.” Bailey further commented that continuing education is a major focus on his agenda. “Programs for continuing education are a must for an RFC® to maintain their designation. To keep their status current, they must renewal their license annually and perform 40 credit hours of CE.”

Another focus will be the importance of ethics and perhaps an adaptation of an Ethics Approved Program initiated in the US this past year.

“We have found our Ethics Approved Program to be highly successful with the US members,” related Bailey. “Being deemed ethically sound is important to clients and prospects when choosing a financial consultant in any country.”

Lastly, Chairman Bailey will extend an invitation for International Chairs to sign up for the IARFC 2018 Biltmore Conference held at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC April 17-19.

“We see this conference as extremely valuable in networking and exchanging ideas,” continued Bailey. “To have international attendees would be extremely educational and invigorating.”

Finalists in the previous competition held in Charlotte, NC.

The IARFC is extending its invitation to University professors to register their undergraduate teams to participate in the 2018 National Financial Plan with a production of a comprehensive personal financial plan based on uniform sample data provided.

The Competition allows for extensive learning opportunities for the students.  These include: developing a personal financial plan following submission guidelines, as a semi-finalist presenting the plan via webinar and finally as a finalist presenting their plans live in front of experienced financial professionals – a realistic career experience.

In 2018, the Finals will be held at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC as part of the 2018 IARFC Biltmore Conference.  Competing teams and their professor will be flown to Asheville for their final presentation, network with financial professionals and enjoy the amenities of the Biltmore estate.

“Watching these young students compete is heartening as we look at the future of our profession in action,” related IARFC Chairman H. Stephen Bailey, MRFC.  “Those who can relate to the judges in a down to earth manner while presenting their financial facts and figures usually perform well in this competition.”

Professors must have their university registered by September 1 with the names of the student teams due by September 15.  The Case Study will be sent out to students on September 20 with the completed plans due not later than 11/20/17.

Along with the competition, the IARFC will be hosting continuing education events, an awards banquet with Keynote Speaker, Ric Edelman, RFC® – widely regarded as one of the nation’s top financial consultants, specialty tours and an ethics program.

“The venue is exciting and a reminder of the entrepreneurial spirit of past industrialists,” continues Bailey.  “Today the Biltmore estate remains the family owned enterprise.

The National Financial Plan Competition relies on Corporate Sponsorship and individual sponsorship from its members.  These members are very interested in helping students in financial programs have a real world experience – the financial plan being a core product for a client.  The competition also provides opportunities for students to network and gain insight from experienced financial consultants.

Helping his client navigate and make sense of the vast amount of instant information is vital to creating a financial strategy.

The IARFC extends its invitation to professors and their undergraduate students enrolled in Financial Services curriculum to participate in the production of a comprehensive personal financial plan based on uniform sample data provided.

“Education is the underlying factor in our competition,” advises IARFC Chairman H. Stephen Bailey, RFC®. “Students need to understand how to present to a real client, in the real world with a real case scenario. Developing a financial plan is the core of what we do.”

The competition allows for extensive learning opportunities. Individual students or teams of two are sent a fictional case study to do the following:

(1) initially develop a personal financial plan following submission guidelines,

(2) as a semi-finalist present the plan via webinar to a panel of financial professionals and finally

(3) as a finalist explain their conclusions live in front of experienced consultants.

The National Financial Plan Competition relies on Corporate Sponsorship and individual sponsorship from its members. These members are very interested in helping students in financial programs have a problem solving real world experience – the financial plan being a basic product for a client.
