The Member’s Award is presented annually in appreciation to top IARFC members who have sponsored the most qualified professional consultants that subsequently joined the ranks of the Association.
By encouraging these professional consultants to become members of the IARFC, these recipients help their peers tap into a premier network of value added benefits. Along with an engraved award of recognition, the winners will be listed in the Association’s publication the Register. A photo will be included as recognition of their efforts.
“This is a new appreciation program for the IARFC,” relates Awards Program Director Wendy Kennedy. “Along with the Loren Dunton Memorial Award and the Founder’s Award, it seeks to applaud the efforts of our distinguished members who believe in the IARFC Mission.”

Our Board of Directors concluded another successful annual Board Meeting in Charlotte, NC on March 15th. The agenda for moving forward in 2017 will be an aggressive membership drive, final application to the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) for its Master Registered Financial Consultant (MRFC) credential and a dedicated strengthening of connection to the International Chapters.
Board Directors in attendance included:
- Chairman H. Stephen Bailey – HB Financial Resources, LTD in Charlotte, NC;
- Vice Chairman Nicholas A. Royer – Group 10 Financial, LLC in Maitland, FL;
- Treasurer Jon M. Rogers – Rogers Financial Group, LLC in Greenville, SC;
- President Peter J. D’Arruda – Capital Financial Advisory Group, LLC in Apex, NC;
Secretary Michelle K. Blair – Farmingville, NY;
- Isabel Cooper – Edelman Financial in Ashburn, VA;

- Rick B. Stanzione – R&R Group in Washington Terrace, UT; and
- Mayo M. Woodward – Birmingham, AL.
All the current Executive Officers Royer, Rogers, D’Arruda and Blair were re-elected to their current positions.
A Packed Agenda
Through two days of agenda, the Board tackled issues facing the Association with innovative and experience-laden solutions. As its number one priority and recognizing membership as the obvious core, quality time was spent on enhancing these relationships. The Board wishes to be a partner by meeting consultants’ needs and adding value to their membership – a very key focus.
Important to both the Association and consumers alike, the second goal is dedicated to completing the accreditation process and after approval marketing a credential that will elevate the status of its professionals. Finalizing the Master Registered Financial Consultant (MRFC) credential has the full backing of the Board along with development of a Study Guide for candidates to take the required exam.
“Credentials are important to us and to those we do business with too,” related the newly elected Board Member Rick Stanzione. “Ethics, integrity and service make us hold our standards to a fiduciary standard. We elect to raise our OWN bar.”
The third goal component is a redefinition of the important bond with international chapters. The Board seeks to connect with the IARFC offshore community on a personal level this year and reinvigorate their dedication and commitment to developing Registered Financial Consultants in their own countries. Understanding their needs, on their level, with their financial professionals and then integrating the US-based programs will result in winning relationships.
“Our directors and our home office team are committed to goals that will increase the visibility and expand the IARFC in ways beyond the scope of our projections,” relates IARFC Chairman H. Stephen Bailey. “I am extremely pleased at the progress made at our meeting. I gratefully salute everyone for their hard work, their experienced suggestions and their foresight.”

Our featured consultant, Thomas F. Lowry, RFC®, CRPC, president of Georgia Wealth Advisors, LLC in Atlanta Georgia is known as the “Retirement Doctor” specializing in the unique type of financial planning that finds the best treatment and prescription to help his clients move from their working years into their retirement year.
According to Lowry, “Many people think of retirement as a destination – as though they are planning a trip to a specific location. But really like life, retirement is a journey and it may be a long one.”
Lowry’s own journey to his chosen career has been diverse – from a big family home life, to Army Ranger, to commercial deep sea diver then ultimately settling into insurance sales. With all these experiences, Lowry touts the one thing that helped him become the professional he is today – having his father as a role model.
“He was incredible,” related Lowry. “He would work hours on end at the emergency room with a sincere concern in taking care of his patients and then come home to eight kids and a crazy house always with a smile on his face.”
When facing his own “patients” or clients, Lowry defines three phases of passage – the Go-Go phase where people want to check off those things on their bucket list and where most people will use their savings to enjoy the early years of retirement; the Slow Go phase where people start slowing down and stay closer to home spending time with family and hobbies; and the No Go years where healthcare becomes the most pertinent issue. He emphasizes the importance of discussing these life stages with clients and finding out how his clients want to treat each phase.
Lowry’s RX for a Happy Retirement…
- Take the unknown out of retirement planning
- Provide a firm understanding of a solid retirement strategy
- Learn how to bridge the income gap caused by retirement
“Our members are passionate and dedicated professionals who find their own brand of motivating and inspiring clients,” comments IARFC Chairman H. Stephen Bailey, RFC®. “Much like medical professionals, we look to treat the financial worries that plague our clientele to assure them a healthy financial picture as they age.”

Branding for the financial professional is not trying to compete on a giant scale of actions such as Coca Cola or Mercedes. It is burning the consultant’s image and competence into the minds of prospects and clients in everything that is presented to them no matter what size company. The snapshot that one projects to the public should be carried through to the smallest detail – an effective campaign of keeping the identity.
This white paper discusses the importance of Branding and the first impression. Branding can set the stage even before the consultant shows up on the scene. It also defines the individual at each step of the client relationship. The importance of visually impacting the client is something every consultant needs to understand and refine. Topics covered in detail help the consultant understand, build and maintain their professional footprint.
As Walter Landor said – “Products are made in the factory, but brands are created in the mind.” Know yourself, know your product and blend the visual with the professionalism – a winning combination.

The International Association of Registered Financial Consultants (IARFC) spotlights the timely topic of adherence to a Code of Ethics in the January/February issue of their industry publication, the Register. Their featured consultant, Barry Dayley, RFC®, of Money Concepts International located in Afton, WY elaborates on how ethical behavior is as relevant today as when he entered financial services thirty years ago.
His time and experience in financial services has taught him that fundamentally the consumer is looking for advice they can trust. They want to work with a financial consultant who has the knowledge, experience and skills to help them achieve their personal objectives ─ one who truly cares about them.
“People want to know what to do financially, not just be sold a product,” relates Dayley. “If advice is provided in the context of a financial plan, it will establish the foundation of a trusting and lasting relationship.”
Barry encourages every RFC to memorize the five-point Code of Ethics of the IARFC. According to him it will be a clarion to guide to maintaining long-term relationships with clients, employees and associates.
IARFC Code of Ethics
I will at all times put my client’s interest above my own.
I will maintain proficiency in my work through continuing education.
When fee-based services are involved, I will charge a fair and reasonable fee based on the amount of time and skill required.
I will abide by both the spirit and the letter of the laws and regulations applicable to financial planning services.
I will give my clients the same service I would give myself in the same circumstances.

Update Ethics Approved Program….
The International Association of Registered Financial Consultants (IARFC) has recently approved over 350 members in the past three months in their new “Ethics Approved” program. This program is an effort towards increased transparency regarding the member’s professional background and their adherence to a Code of Ethics.
The IARFC Team is reviewing all membership renewals submitted to the Association and rewarding members for their long-term commitment to the IARFC Code of Ethics. They are checking FINRA records, state licensing records and even conducting an internet search of each member’s name. Reviewed history includes personal or business bankruptcies, compromised credit issues, any pending customer disputes, regulatory events and/or criminal misdemeanors or felonies.
Members need to have a clean record for the preceding five (5) years in order to qualify for the Ethics Approved Program. Members who meet these standards will receive an embossed seal stating they are “Ethics Approved” with the year of the review and is effective for two years.
“We feel that this additional check is our obligation to the public who needs assurance of the integrity of their financial professional,” explained Chairman H. Stephen Bailey. “The public is more educated than ever and needs assurance of the background of their financial professional and their adherence to a Code of Ethics.”
The IARFC, founded in 1984, is a non-profit credentialing organization formed to foster public confidence in the financial planning profession. Their professional designation – the Registered Financial Consultant (RFC®) is awarded to those consultants who can meet the high standards of education, experience and integrity that are required of all its members.
Vicki Caplinger in IARFC Membership Services, weighed in on the significance of the program and how the members can utilize their approved status. “Members receive Ethics Approved branding recognition in the form of digital logos, embossed seals and sample media releases. It is our hope that they utilize these tools to enhance consumer confidence when serving clients and prospects.”
